Community Volunteer Programs

BASC for decades has taken pride volunteering in organized programs that teach kids how to fish. We regard ourselves as leaders in the community who want to contribute to helping develop the love for fishing with the next generations. It’s important to help them develop the desire and understanding, as they will be the future who foster and take control of our fishery.

About:   CDFW Fishing In The City Program

Bay Area Sportfishers Club is sponsoring the March 12 2023, South Bay Fishing In The City (SBFIC) event being held at Sandy Wool Lake in Milpitas, California. Young and new anglers under 16 years of age come from all over the SF Bay Area to learn fishing skills such as how to tie a knot, rig their rod, cast and bait their hook. To round out their education they learn about ecology and taking care of the environment. After they have become acquainted with their new skills, they get to apply what they have learned and have fun catching the fish in Sandy Wool Lake. You can read about this FIC program through their website: Fishing in the City Program Overview (ca.gov)

A series of videos has been developed by the FIC Program to enable beginners to learn the basics prior to going to this event.

They are available at (111) South Bay Fishing in the City Virtual Clinic - YouTube

  • To volunteer you sign up through BASC when the event is announced.

  • This event is announced ahead of time on our calendar and Events page.

About:   C.A.S.T for Kids Program

The C.A.S.T. for Kids event is designed to provide children with disabilities, ages 7 – 17, the opportunity to enjoy a quality outdoor recreational experience through the sport of fishing. This is our local event for the Bay Area Lake (Los Vaqueros) that we volunteer for: https://castforkids.org/event/losvaquerosreservoir/

  • To volunteer as a BASC member, you sign up directly through the CAST website (link above).

  • CAST events are held all over California (& the US) so there are many additional events you can volunteer for if you so desire.

  • Los Vaqueros is our clubs “Home" Lake and very special for us to represent.

  • The organizer of these CAST events welcomes as many volunteers as possible.

About:   Cub Scouts of America Program

We work with local Cub Scout dens and teach them how to fish at local lakes typically in the South Bay such as Lake Vasona in Los Gatos.

  • These Cub Scout events are typically arranged when a den reaches out to our club.

  • These are small groups and need only a handful of BASC volunteers at each event.

We’re excited about helping these Cub Scouts work on their elective fishing adventure to advance in their ranks.

We seek 4 BASC members  (in addition to Steve & Sharon Ondry) to help out with the above at  each event.  You can volunteer for any or all three of the events. BASC  members should be there at 8 a.m. to help set up as the Cub Scouts will  arrive at 9 a.m.  All county parks open at 8 a.m.  The event should end  at noon.

(BASC members only)

What we’re going to do:

  • Teach 6 Cub Scouts at each  event about safety and ethics, local fishing regulations, fishing  equipment, the improved clinch knot and have them practice it, how to  cast, how to rig their pole and then give them a tackle box & bait  and have them fish at the lake

  • Each Cub Scout will have an adult with them so there is no additional training needed for working with children

  • Where is the event?

  • TBD for 2023

What is this event?

This is a C.A.S.T. for Kids event designed to provide children with disabilities, ages 7 – 17, the opportunity to enjoy a quality outdoor recreational experience through the sport of fishing.

Why is this event worth Volunteering for?

If you have never volunteered before and are interested in trying it, this event is special because no matter what you do to help, you get to be witness to pure goodness with a day full of kids who get to do something they may only experience once in their life.

Aside from the fishing portion of the day being a blast, the whole event is super special with the organization giving the kids a fishing package to take home, a great meal and an award to acknowledge each child in a ceremony at the end of the event. This is an amazing experience that leaves you feeling privileged and grateful for what you have in life and more-so for being able to be a part of this opportunity.

Comment from Member Steve Estrada:  "My son and I have volunteered for this and can honestly say there is no more rewarding feeling then to help a child learn how to fish for their first time."

What are the Volunteer Roles?

  • Organization Volunteer:  This volunteer helps with anything needed to from set up to clean up. There is a huge need for this as the event includes donated tackle for the kids that need to be issued, food and drinks, awards, ect. If you are not experienced at fishing, this is a great role to experience the event and equally important for this event to be successful.

  • Shore Fishing Trainer Volunteer:  You will assist with teaching a child participant (accompanied by a parent) the process of fishing. Experience fisherman is needed for this role.

  • Boater Captain & Fishing Trainer Volunteer:   This position requires a very experienced boater and fisherman who knows the lake. You will be responsible for driving either a single family in a small aluminum boat or a large pontoon with 2 families,  helping them set up gear for fishing and then fishing with them to help them attempt to catch fish. You would need to know how to anchor a boat and handle all scenarios related to being on the water in a vessel.

  • Where is the event?

  • 9990 Los Vaqueros Road
    Byron, CA 94514
